Comments:
The cemetery is situated 13 ˝ miles west of Codette along Grid #789. The first burial was the Henry Derksen, the son of Aron and Maria Derksen, born September 6, 1909 and died September 23, 1909. The Aron Derksen’s donated to bury their son, Henry. But Mrs. Derksen’s parents, the Heinrich P. Neufelds’ wanted to donate some too. So they decided to each donate half an acre.
The Bethany Cemetery has taken on a much different appearance from the earlier years. More land was donated by Mrs. Henry Ens and John B. Neufeld, thereby enlarging it to the West. Spruce trees were planted around the outside of the cemetery by volunteer help from the community in 1984. A steel sign has also been placed at the cemetery.
The cemetery is registered with the Rural Municipality. John Hoeppner was in charge of assigning plots for many years. When he moved to British Columbia, Peter Hoeppner took over. Then Aaron Ens did it, and then George R. Neufeld did it for many years. Now Dennis Wiebe is in charge.
The church community organizes the upkeep of the cemetery. They delegate the caretaking, grass cutting etc. to volunteer groups of families. Once a year they also have a cleaning bee some time before Mother’s Day.
